Fun Facts to Know and Tell...
Birdsong and Crime Rates

Whenever I am going to a party or event of some kind where I know that I want to talk about something more interesting than the weather, I try to find a fun little fact to "know and tell". Let me tell you about something that I came across this week.

I think we can all agree that the sounds of birds chirping away in the morning makes it easier to get out of bed. It signals the sky is clear and the sun is most likely on its way up. Those early birds are there to help us welcome the day! It is one of my most favorite sounds on earth!

The city of Lancaster, California is broadcasting on their Main Street a custom mixed soundtrack of birds chirping, soft piano music and the quiet sounds of water... and the claim is that this recording is helping to reduce the crime rate. The basic theory is...

Bird sounds can reduce cortisol and adrenaline, which are
produced by the human body in response to stress

Of course there is debate going on about whether or not this is actually lowering the crime but I say it's certainly worth a try... and at the very least making life for it's residents and visitors more pleasant.
