One of my mom's handpicked bouquets that she always has around the house.

In my volunteer work at the Ronald McDonald House, I see how fast your life can change in a day.

10 days ago my 87 year old mom (who drives a stick shift, goes to Zumba, line dances, plays bridge, volunteers at libraries, enjoys martinins) suffered a major stroke. I have been taking turns, with my dad and siblings, at her bedside at Stanford Hospital ever since. My sister is there for the weekend. I am in LA with my husband and daughter for a little break.

My mom's determination is an inspiration to me. She has amazed the doctors. At this time she has a little speech and a little movement on her right side. The doctors expected none.  She is accepted at a nearby acute rehab center, a boot camp of rehab centers, where she will spend the next 3-4 weeks.

I will be away from my blog for quite a while...spending a lot of time in California with my lovely mom and equally vibrant dad...who I just taught how to do the wash and how to run the dishwasher! :) And my mom is teaching me... how to stay strong, work hard and not give up!

I hope all is well with you and your families.

Always in my kitchen...

It's time to introduce you to one of my favorite cooking ingredients...Better Than Bouillon! This economical, natural chicken stock is just delicious and takes up very little space in the fridge. It is an organic paste that you mix with hot water (1 teaspoon per cup of water). You can find it at any grocery store, and if you happen to belong to Costco you may find it there as a large jar of course.

My wonderful father-in-law is visiting so we've watched a lot more football on TV than we usually do. It was a nice surprise to see the NFL support of national breast cancer awareness month...splashes of pink were seen all over the field and in the stands as well! Pink sure looks great on TV!

Ladies...remember to schedule your mammograms!
