Welcoming Fall

Green Apple. Original oil painting by June Davis

I had forgotten how much I love this little poem about Fall by John Updike, until I saw it appear on Rosemary's Blog. I always associate green apples with Fall. I was happy to find this sweet little oil painting on the Etsy site of June Davis.

September

The breezes taste
     Of apple peel.
The air is full
      Of smells to feel—

Ripe fruit, old footballs,
      Burning brush,
New books, erasers,
      Chalk, and such.

The bee, his hive,
      Well-honeyed hum,
And Mother cuts
      Chrysanthemums.

Like plates washed clean
     With suds, the days
Are polished with
      A morning haze.
