I saw an owl in the wild!!!

My Barred Owl at Tryon Creek State Park, Portland Oregon.  May 2011
I have put together a little owl fest in celebration of me spotting my very first owl in the wild! If you have been following my blog you may remember that my new years resolution in 2008 was to see an owl in the wild...which did not happen until 2009...and that owl was spotted by my friend. This cute barred owl...was spotted by me (!) about 30 feet off of a trail at Tryon Creek State Park, silently watching hikers go by. It was 4 o'clock in the afternoon.

16 years later...

Part of the Bright Angel Trail thru the Grand Canyon

In May of 1995 I hiked down the Bright Angel Trail thru the Grand Canyon to join friends and family on the second half of a 16 day river trip on the Colorado River. We left our children, who were 7 and 9 at the time, at home.

Sixteen years later I have just done the reverse.

I just completed the hike up the Bright Angel Trail out of the Grand Canyon after rafting the first half of the 16 day river trip on the Colorado River. This time my daughter and son were with us. My daughter hiked out with me (and 4 others) and my son stayed on the river...rowing his own raft.

The whitewater was HUGE, spending time with friends and family was priceless and the hike out (9 miles and 5000 feet elevation gain) was awesome. Months of working out and training specifically for this hike paid off.

I left my camera with my husband, who is still on the river, but will post photos of this most memorable journey when he returns.

May 5th...Children's Day in Japan

Today, May 5th,  is Children’s Day in Japan...a national holiday to celebrate
the happiness of all children. Isn't it wonderful to have a national holiday to
celebrate children?

Families in Japan fly giant carp windsocks, called Koinobori (carp flags), from flagpoles next to their house in hopes that their children will be strong and healthy and to inspire the children to persevere. The carp are a symbol of perseverance based on a story
about carp that swam up a waterfall and turned into dragons.

In honor of this years Children's Day I have made a donation to Portland based Mercy Corps for the relief effort in Japan. I send all of the people in Japan my warmest wishes for a wonderful holiday.
